Exposed
Everybody wants a well-rounded person. Whether "everybody" is a school, university, club, organization, employer, or company, a well-rounded person is preferred. In my goal to become more well-round, I realized that I have to separate myself from the pack. I'll achieve this by going beyond what is required and what is expected. My aim is not to offend anyone, but I believe that individuals need to step it up in order to ensure success. It is important to become aware of the industry one wishes to become a part of after graduation. Knowledge has to go beyond what one attains from the classroom. Of course, to some this may seem like common sense, but with my experience with some of my peers, I find that this is not always true. Some, however, know that knowledge outside the classroom is important, yet they fail to implement actions. I think students tend to believe that their only competition are those who are at the same institution, but in fact, if one is even among the best of the best, that doesn’t mean much if one is outside the walls of his or her home institution. In these hard times, finding employment will get rough and in order to survive and live comfortably, one has to be better than the best or at least have really good connections. Even with good connections, you still have to be able to do the job and to do it well. Get out and become informed of what is going on, what other students are doing, and what has been done. Learn about the programs, research opportunities, seminars that are going on at other institutions. Be up-to-date. Read articles that relate to the field of study. Write papers (yes, outside of classroom assignments) about subjects that are of interest and relevance. In order words: Do the MOST, go OVERBOARD, become EXPOSED!
